What are Profiling beds and how do they Support Independence

Beds are the most important part of any care home environment for residents. They are where your residents will spend large proportions of their time. The need for them to be comfortable, supportive and maintain wellbeing is paramount. Lots of care homes utilise profiling beds, these are more than your average divan bed and offer extra levels of wellbeing and independence for your care home residents. Here’s how…

Profiling beds can substantially improve quality of life for the residents as well as helping care nurses tend to them. Profiling beds make reaching things, moving in and out of bed much easier for residents, help with skin care and aid the residents view of their surroundings.

What is a profiling bed?

Profiling beds are adjustable and can change position to suit the intended ‘profile’ of the resident. They are mainly seen in hospitals, care homes and other care environments – even home care.

Profiling beds are split into sections which are connected to motors. These motors allow for adjustments to be made from a handset. These adjustments help the comfort of your residents. Leg positions can be changed, back rests adjusted and the overall height of the bed can also change to aid residents and nurses.

Profiling beds tend to come in four part profiles, with a variety of variable functions available; these include adjustable height, adjustable leg supports, and adjustable back supports, all to help make it easier for residents to remain comfortable.

Height Adjustments

This allows for the bed to be easily repositioned to be lowered or raised to the ideal height for the resident and task at hand.

The height of the bed can be easily matched to meet the requirements of the resident, wheelchair, independent transfers or simply to stand up from.

Being able to lower the bed means that it is easier for the resident to get back into it or lift their legs. It also reduces the risk of an injury from a fall. When it comes carer assistance, having a bed that can change height makes it easier for carers to help the residents in and out of bed safely.

Adjustable Heads

At the touch of a button a resident can be repositioned so that they are more upright. This helps to give the resident more freedom and independence. They can view the whole room as well as fully engage with visitors.

This extra positioning and sitting up right is known to help lung function and make breathing easier. It can also help with digestion. All in all there are a number of health benefits to sitting upright. Repostioning on a pressure relieving mattress will also help lower the risk of painful pressure sores.

Adjusting legs

It is important for wellbeing to be able to adjust feet, knees and legs. Incorrect positing of leg joints can be uncomfortable and exert undue stress on the body. By raising the knee selection, a leg brake is formed. This offers a natural means of ensuring residents don’t slip in bed. Being able to adjust leg positions can also benefit circulation.
