Choosing The Right Over Chair or Overbed Table

Over chair and overbed tables are a type of portable table that can be placed over the user while they’re in bed or sitting in a chair, as opposed to regular tables such as dining room tables or desks. One of the major benefits of over chair and overbed tables is that the user does not need to bend or strain themselves. This makes them ideal for those with limited mobility, such as someone recovering from an injury who must stay in bed for extended periods of time.

Over chair and overbed tables must be steady, user-friendly and easily transportable, to do this there are several factors that must be taken into consideration. We discuss the different configurations of over chair and overbed tables below.

Adjustable

Overbed and over chair tables can be adjustable so that they tilt to a range of angles, but they should also have the option of remaining flat, which is necessary for eating meals. The height of the table should also be adjustable to match each individual user.

Portable

Overbed and over chair tables should be easily movable, which is why many of these tables come with castors as a common configuration.

Covers

Non-absorbent plastic covers are easily wipeable and a great choice due to their customisable colours. Beech is another stylish option. Most importantly, the table cover should be lightweight, smooth and easy to clean.

Combination Tables

Some overbed tables can also be converted into an over chair with the use of a split countertop surface, this makes them suitable for patients with some mobility. Therefore, whether the patient would prefer to remain in bed or move to a chair, a combined overbed/over chair table will suit their needs.
