Fife Council Care Home Furniture Refurbisment

Fife council, the third largest local authority in Scotland, put forward a business case a few years ago to start a care home replacement programme. The care homes within their portfolio were becoming dated and no longer fulfilled the changing needs of their service users. For example, the original buildings were not designed with en-suite, instead using shared bathrooms and toilets and bedrooms were smaller as, at the time of design, the level of equipment that is required now i.e. tracking hoists, were not needed.

AIM: The overall aim of the new care villages is to provide a new model of care for older people, with purpose built buildings that meet the current and future needs of residents.

Aim of the care village approach is to create a hub of the community where elderly people have a safe and friendly environment to socialise.

Three care villages have been opened in total, all featuring:

-          A 60-bed care home providing long term care

-          Extra-care housing units

-          Day care facility

-          Drop-in area and café for older people in the local community

-          Hairdressing salon

-          Cinema room for residents

-          Sensory garden

Our goal was to create a domestic environment that had a high end hotel look whilst feeling homely – home from home and stayed within budget! The products needed to be sturdy, aesthetically pleasing and easy to use.

The clear brief is that the care homes had to look WOW!

Ostler’s Way, Kirkaldy was the first care village to be built in Fife’s replacement programme, replacing Appin House and Raith Gates home to move over to the larger 60 bed model.  It has proven to be very successful and acted as the blueprint for Lindsay and Napier House.

Everything proposed was fit for purpose, didn’t look old fashioned, rounded edges, tied in with colour schemes, had clear vision dementia friendly robustness, substantial looking furniture – some of the applications were not domestic or old fashioned. Renray’s furniture was contemporary and fit for purpose.

Testimonial

“I would like to thank you for the contribution you have made during the closure process of Valley House and Jenny Gray House and the build and opening of Lindsay House. Without your support this could not have been achieved and I appreciate the work you have done to help us deliver successfully on this project.  Lindsay House is fantastic and residents/staff have settled in well.” – Louise Bell, Service Manager

We have now delivered on our 3rd care home replacement (closing 6 care homes and building 3 new) and this completes Phase 1 of the programme.  This could not be achieved without excellent team working.  Thank you.
